What is the Current Capital Balance on my Portfolio?
What is the Current Capital Balance on my Portfolio?
Updated over a week ago

You may have seen Current Capital Balance described in different ways throughout your investment journey. At EquityMultiple, our goal is to provide you with a clear window into your investments on the platform, and the metrics that comprise both your Current Capital Balance and your Exited Capital Invested.

We describe the Current Capital Balance as all of your non-exited investment contributions, minus any pending or posted principal payments on your investments that have not yet exited. In other words, the sole event that will draw down on your Current Capital Balance, is receiving a pending or posted principal payment for an investment that has not yet exited. Note, we do not use the Current Capital Balance to reflect any balance of funds, or a "wallet"- type function.

What is the difference between Current Capital Balance and Lifetime Invested?

You may be familiar with a past metric on the Portfolio page called Lifetime Invested. Your Lifetime Invested is the sum total of every funded contribution you have made in an offering on the platform. While this metric no longer appears at the Portfolio Overview level, you may view your total investments per each tab of the Portfolio under the Total - Investment Amount column at the bottom of each tab (Keep, Earn, Grow, and Exited).

In early 2023, we began featuring the Current Capital Balance at the Portfolio Overview level. We describe the Current Capital Balance as all of your non-exited investment contributions, minus any pending or posted principal payments on your investments that have not yet exited.

Which of my investments are included in the Current Capital Balance total?

The Portfolio Overview is separated into two sections: Current and Exited investments.

Your investments that are no longer distributing and have exited are included in the Capital Invested metric on the Exited section of the Portfolio Overview (these investments may be viewed individually on the Exited tab of the Portfolio).

Note that your Capital Invested total on the Exited section of the Portfolio Overview does not take into account your Current Capital Balance. Capital Invested is the sum total of your contributions in investments that have exited.

Investments included in the Current Capital Balance total are investments that you have subscribed and funded into, and that are part of an offering on the platform that is in a pre-cashflowing or cash-flowing state.

Are Capital Call contributions included in the Current Capital Balance?

Yes, we include Capital Call contributions in the sum total that makes up the Current Capital Balance on your Portfolio, as long as the investment is in a pre-cashflowing or cash-flowing state.

Are Dividend Reinvestment contributions included in the Current Capital Balance?

Yes, depending on the offering that the Dividend Reinvestment is attached to, your Dividend Reinvestment may appear in the sum total that makes up the Current Capital Balance, as long as the investment is in a pre-cashflowing or cash-flowing state.

One of my investments just exited. Will this draw down my Current Capital Balance?

No, not exactly - investments that exit do not draw down on the Current Capital Balance. Exited investments become part of the Capital Invested metric on the Exited section of the Portfolio Overview.

Instead, exited investments are no longer included in the sum total of all non-exited contributions that comprise the Current Capital Balance. We define the Current Capital Balance as the sum total of all non-exited investment contributions, less any pending or posted principal payments on investments that have not yet exited. In other words, an investment contribution that has exited will no longer be included in the sum total comprising the Current Capital Balance, but it will not be subtracted from Current Capital Balance either.

For example, if a Portfolio Overview shows $50,000 in non-exited capital under the Current Capital Balance, and the investor receives a $25,000 principal payment on one of their investments that has not yet exited, their Current Capital Balance becomes $25,000. If the investor receives another principal payment of $4,500 on an investment that has not yet exited, their Current Capital Balance then becomes $20,500. But should the investment that received the initial $25,000 then exit, the investors Current Capital Balance will stay at $20,500 rather than drawing down to -$4,500.
